DePuy Hip Implant Recall Lawyers in NJ

DePuy Orthopedics is a division of Johnson & Johnson. In August 2010, DePuy recalled two of their hip replacement systems; the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System and the DePuy ASR Resurfacing device.

DePuy’s ASR hip implants are metal-on-metal, consisting of a metal acetabular cup, which is implanted into the hip, and a metal femoral ball that connects to the leg.

These hip implants were recalled due to high levels of metal ions being released into the surrounding tissue, causing high failure rates along with serious complications in patients, and leading to contact of our lawyers in NJ.

Before DePuy recalled these implants, data on revision rates and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) complaints highlighted flaws in the product design. Complications reported included pain, tissue damage, pseudotumors, osteolysis, loosening, and the need for revision surgeries to extract and replace the implant.

It is believed that the complications with the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular hip implant are caused by the release of metal debris into surrounding tissue and the patient’s bloodstream. In addition to the complications noted above, it is believed that elevated levels of cobalt in the bloodstream can lead to cobalt poisoning, which causes a number of serious health effects, including tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo, deafness, blindness, optic nerve atrophy, convulsions, headaches and peripheral neuropathy.

In November 2014, a nationwide settlement with hip implant recall lawyers was announced that provided compensation for many patients who had been previously implanted with a DePuy ASR and subsequently had to undergo revision surgery. However, many DePuy ASR cases are still pending and still more individuals may be subject to device failure.
