DRUG LIABILITY - ACTOS
Actos
Actos (Pioglitazone) is a drug prescribed to those individuals suffering from Type 2 Diabetes, which is a condition which develops when the body does not produce enough insulin or doesn't efficiently use the insulin that it does produce. It has been on the market since 1999. Actos is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals and is the 14th most sold medication in the United States. On June 15, 2011, the FDA issued a safety announcement stating that the use of Actos® for over a year may be associated with an increased risk of bladder cancer. They reported that the risk of bladder cancer increased with increasing dose and duration of pioglitazone use.
Studies undertaken in other countries, including Germany and France, pointed to a significant increased risk of bladder cancer and both countries have halted the sale of Actos.
Bladder cancer is the second most common urological cancer and the fourth most common cancer in men. The common signs and symptoms of bladder cancer include: pain while urinating, blood in the urine, back or abdominal pain, and urinary urgency. Bladder cancer may spread to nearby areas or lymph nodes throughout the body.
