Shipyard Workers are at a high risk of exposure to asbestos.
Many New York and New Jersey retirees worked at the area shipyards
during World War II, and some made all or part of their careers
at the shipyards in the post-war years. The new construction,
overhaul, and repair of Navy, Merchant and other ships caused
friable asbestos products to be present in the confined spaces,
and engine and boiler rooms of ships resulting in asbestos exposure
to all trades working in these areas.
