BENZENE EXPOSURE, POISONING & SIDE EFFECTS

Benzene is a chemical found in a number of products like rubber, paint and plastics, and also is common in products derived from gasoline, petroleum, coal and other fuels.

Even small amounts of benzene are dangerous and hazardous to both workers and civilians who come in contact with the chemical. . Exposure to petroleum solvents that contain benzene is common in many industries, including the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, dyes, explosives, detergents, and other products. The major sources of benzene exposure include industrial fumes, pollution of the water, soil, and air from toxic factory emissions, and other sources in the surrounding area.

Workers using solvents that contain benzene commonly breathe in the toxic vapors from the solvents, but benzene can also be absorbed through skin contact. These exposures can cause long term side effects such as with problems of blood and bone morrow production, immune, nervous, and reproductive system damage, and leukemia. The short term effects of high exposure to benzene include dizziness, drowsiness, unconsciousness, confusion, anemia, increase in pulse, and possibly death.

Studies have shown that workers who use petroleum solvents containing benzene have an increased risk of developing certain cancers and blood diseases after prolonged exposure. Benzene is classified under the EPA’s Risk Assessment Guidelines of 1986 as a Group A “known” human carcinogen, meaning it can cause cancer, and more commonly for benzene, leukemia. There are many diseases associated with benzene exposure, such as chronic myelogenous leukimia (CML), acute myelogenous leukemia (AML), hairy cell leukemia (HCL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma, myelodysplaspic syndrome (MDS), and Hodgkin's Disease.
